Spurs could buy Kane again - they have a buyout clause

Reading Time: 3min | Wed. 20.09.23. | 11:05

Tottenham director confirmed the existence of the clause in Kane's contract

After the Harry Kane transfer saga this June, everybody knows all about Daniel Levy. The notorious Spurs director is one of the toughest negotiators out there, and it’s well documented, from other coaches (Sir Alex Ferguson), to players (Modrić). He bargains hard, he knows no boundaries, he tries to change the deal once it’s already agreed….And now we found out another thing he did – he got the chance to sign Kane again.

Levy was answering questions at the fans forum for the first time in years and revealed a stunning fact – that Spurs have the buyback clause inserted in Kane’s contract with Bayern. Spurs director was alongside manager Ange Postecoglou and new captain Son Heung-min last night, and at one point confirmed: ‘There is a buy-back clause.’

That basically means that when (and if) Harry Kane decides to go back to the Premier League, Tottenham will be the first club to get a chance to buy him. Only if they decline to do so, others might decide to go for the England captain. And his return to England at some point also looks quite reasonable. He would still very much like to break down Alan Shearer’s Premier League record for goals scored. He left for Bayern 47 goals shy of Shearer's long-standing record of 260, and he will need at least two more seasons in England to top that. And tonight, he will play against another club which was widely expected to sign him, but ultimately brought in a much younger version for similar amount.

Young Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund was brought in from Atalanta for 72 million pounds (28 million less than Kane’s transfer to Bayern), but everybody knows that Erik ten Hag’s wish was the England captain. Eventually, Manchester executives pointed out that selling Kane to another Premier League team would be almost impossible for Levy, and when they calculated the Harry’s possible wage, it was decided that Hojlund was much cheaper option. So when asked if he has any regrets for not signing the Bayern striker, Ten Hag replied:

No. I think we’ve discussed it. We are happy with Rasmus. In the first game, he was injured. He played against Arsenal, he's had a start against Brighton, and now we have to integrate him in the team. You can see he's a big talent” said the Dutchman.
