Spurs fail to win against lowly Newcastle, Kane’s two goals good enough only for a draw

Reading Time: 3min | Sun. 04.04.21. | 17:58

The game finished 2-2, but there were a lot of good chances during the game

When you play against a team that won only twice in the last 18 games, and your rival for the Champions League spot has just lost to WBA, what do you do? Well, you should win comfortably, but if you are Mourinho’s Spurs, you miss the chance to go forth and you draw! Tottenham spilled the points (again) this season and managed only a 2-2 draw against lowly Newcastle.

It was a game between two managers who are most likely to get sacked (Bruce is first, Mourinho the second on the bookie's list) and it ended with a point apiece, but according to chances, it should have been at least 4-4. The Special One could not win at St. James Park again (only one win in 9 games in Newcastle) and we’ll see if this result costs him the job. Don’t forget, the Spurs would have to pay him around 40 million euros if they sack him...As far as Newcastle is concerned, they just can’t win however they play. If they don’t create chances, they lose. If they create chances and have better possession (like they did today), they lose. Unlike in some other games, Magpies had some really good chances today, but they were not precise and concentrated enough. With the defensive errors Spurs made in this match, Mourinho has been A Lucky One, because any other club, apart from wasteful Newcastle would score at least three goals, that’s how good chances they were.

Dwight Gale suggested that Newcastle could do something in this match when he missed two colossal chances in the same attack, in the 19th minute. But, nine minutes later, it was 1-0 for the hosts. It sounds amazing, but it did happen in this match: Joelington scored. The Brazilian forward finally found the net and this was his only second Premier League goal in 32 matches this season!

But, Newcastle made sure to keep its reputation as a team that conceded goals after defensive blunders. Precisely 91 seconds after an opening goal, Emil Kraft made an error and Harry Kane scored his easiest goal of the season. And just to keep his fantastic goalscoring series this season, the England international added another one six minutes later, as his powerful shot passed near Dubravka for the lead.

When Son came in for Vinicius at halftime, it was logical to assume that the Spurs will kill of the game within minutes. But the guests gave possession to the hosts, and it was actually the Magpies who enjoyed more possession. Joelington had a wonderful chance in the 70th minute but was not precise. And Almiron came back to help his defense and clear the ball off the line in the 67th minute. Kane had two great chances to score a hat-trick in this match, but Dubravka made a save the first time, and Kane hit the woodwork in the second. And when Tottenham couldn’t score the third, a punishment came. On-loan Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock came from the bench to score the equalizer in the 85th second for another Mourinho headache.
