Stars Abroad: Eric Johanna down with illness as Mwene features in Bundesliga

Kenyans plying their trade aboard registered mixed results on Saturday with Phillip Mwene featuring in the 1-2 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Kenyans had a mixed bag on Saturday with former Mathare United midfielder Eric Johanna missing a friendly due to illness as Eric Ouma clocked 90 minutes in a Swedish Cup win.

Jonah Ayunga

Kenyan forward Jonah Ayunga clocked 90 minutes for Bristol Rovers in the 2-0 defeat to Gillingham in the English League One.

Ayunga was fresh from scoring a brace against Portsmouth on Tuesday in the 3-1 win as they moved to relegation safety.

Gillingham grabbed their goals courtesy of a second-half brace from John Akinde.

Eric Johanna

Kenyan international Eric Johanna sat out of the 0-1 loss to Lindome due to a bout of illness.

The club issued a statement before the match noting that they would miss a number of players due to injuries and illnesses.

“J-Södra is missing the following players in the training match against Lindome, Due to injuries: Enock Kwakwa, Kevin Rodeblad Lowe, Mikael Marqués De Pombal Vivar, Mohammed Fazal. Due to illness: Eric Omondi, Gabriel Andren. African U20 Championship: Adam Ben Lamin,” read the statement. 

Eric Marcelo Ouma

Kenyan international Eric Ouma featured for AIK in the 1-2 win over Oskarshamns in the Swedish Cup.

Eritrean Henok Goitom opened the scoring for AIK before Malte Persson doubled their lead in the 56th minute with Oskar Stejdahl pulling one back for Oskarshamns three minutes later.

Phillip Mwene 

Kenyan defender Phillip Mwene was part of the Mainz team that beat Borussia Monchengladbach 1-2 in the German Bundesliga.

Karim Onisiwo opened the scoring for Mainz in the 10th minute with Lars Stindl restoring parity in the 26th minute.

Kevin Stöger bagged an 86th-minute winner to extend their unbeaten run to three with takes them to just a point off relegation safety.

Anthony Akumu

Former Gor Mahia midfielder Anthony Akumu featured for Kaizer Chiefs in the 1-1 stalemate against Supersport United.

Reeve Fosler opened the scoring for Chiefs in the 29th minute with Bradley Grobler earning Supersport a point with a 67th-minute strike.
