Ayunga, who has been a vital part of the Saints’ frontline, opened the scoring against Rangers on Sunday at the SMiSA Stadium, giving his side a deserved lead in a 1-1 draw.
The Kenya international impressed in the first half but was forced off after the break with a knock on his knee.
St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson confirmed that the forward has been sidelined from training throughout the week as the medical staff monitor his recovery.
"Jonah Ayunga has missed training all week with a knock on his knee, so we'll assess him on Saturday and see how he is,” Robinson told BBC Sport.
Ayunga’s absence is part of a wider challenge for St Mirren, with fellow striker Mikael Mandron playing with a knock against Rangers, while Roland Idowu, nursing a knee problem, was limited to a late cameo in the same match.
“Roland Idowu is still carrying a knock on his knee, so we'll rest him next week. We'll try and get him through this week,” Robinson said.
The club is now actively exploring the possibility of bringing in an additional striker before the European transfer window closes.
“We're not any closer, but I would love to get another striker in a quick one that gives us options,” Robinson added.
“I felt in the Rangers game, if we had that electric pace up front, then we may have hit them on the counter-attack because they're obviously aggressive with how they're planning to get back into the game.”
Despite the fitness concerns, Ayunga remains optimistic and is enjoying his football in Scotland.
The 27-year-old, who has developed a strong partnership with Mandron, believes their chemistry can help the Saints turn their performances into results.
“Me and Mika, we’ve got a good relationship playing together now. Since I signed for St Mirren, to be fair, I’ve always preferred playing in a two, and I think we’ve always got joy from it. It’s enjoyable playing up there with Mika,” Ayunga said.
St Mirren have endured a tough start to their league campaign, facing both Old Firm clubs as well as resurgent sides like Motherwell and Hearts.
Despite collecting just two points, their spirited performances have raised hopes of securing a fourth successive top-six finish.
“We’ve had a very tough start. So, to be where we are with the performances we’ve put in, everyone’s confident and we’re in a good position to crack on,” Ayunga added.
“I think we’ve got to be realistic for St Mirren, but we’ve over-achieved as a team over the last three years and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be aspiring to do that again.”
Ayunga’s return to full fitness could prove decisive as St Mirren look to revive their season and build on their promising displays.
