Tanzanian government announces a billion shilling prize for national team at CHAN

The team will earn handsomely from scoring goals and making it past the group stage
The Tanzanian national men's football team, Taifa Stars received a major morale booster ahead of the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after their government unveiled a lucrative reward system.
Tanzania is one of the co-hosts of the PAMOJA CHAN alongside Kenya and Uganda, with the country hosting the tournament's opening ceremony.

The ceremony will precede the opening match pitting Tanzania against Burkina Faso on Saturday, 3 August at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
As part of the government’s effort to support the team and have it progress to the latter stages, cash rewards of up to Tsh1 billion (approximately Kshs 50 million) have been promised.
The team will receive Tshs1 billion if they go all the way to win the tournament and Tshs 500 million (approximately Ksh25 million) for making an appearance at the finals.
Further, the team will also earn Tshs 2000 million (approximately Kshs10 million for a semi final appearance and an equal amount for every goal scored in the semis.
The lucrative awards were announced by the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Palamaganda Kabudi on behalf of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu in a media briefing on Thursday.
“If Taifa Stars win the CHAN title, the government will offer a reward of 1bn/-. If the team reaches the final, they will receive 500m/-, and 200m/- if they make it to the semi-finals.
In addition, there will be a special ‘Goli la Mama’ (Mama’s Goal) bonus of 20 million for every goal scored in the semi-final,” said Kabudi.
Additionally, Government Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa announced that the government will also give a reward of Tshs10 million (approximately Kshs 500,000 for every goal scored in the group stage.
As a way of building the excitement, momentum and mobilization ahead of the tournament, the government will host the CHAN Singeli Festival, a two-day cultural event in celebration of the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony of the biennial tournament will be presided over by Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.
