Former Manchester United player had heart problems again and was rushed to the hospital
Very distressing scenes unfolded in Odense during the friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine. Midway through the second half, with the home side leading 2–1, Christian Eriksen suddenly collapsed on the pitch. The incident immediately brought back memories of the dramatic scenes from 2021 in Copenhagen, when one of Denmark's greatest-ever midfielders suffered a cardiac arrest and was later fitted with a heart device following surgery. Despite being diagnosed with a heart condition, Eriksen was cleared to continue playing professional football. He has done so successfully ever since, but these events, it is difficult to imagine anyone feeling comfortable seeing the former Tottenham superstar go through such an ordeal again.
The 15-minute drama ultimately had a positive ending, as Eriksen got back to his feet and received a standing ovation from the crowd in Odense. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was deeply unsettling. The moment Eriksen collapsed, the television director immediately switched the broadcast away from the scene and did not show the medical treatment being administered. After several tense minutes, a huge sigh of relief and loud applause echoed around the stadium as spectators realized Eriksen was conscious and recovering. Before that, the coaches of both teams had been discussing whether the match should continue at all.
In the end, the referee made what many considered the only sensible decision: he abandoned the otherwise insignificant friendly match. At the time play was stopped, Denmark was leading 2–1.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the field himself. As I see it, the pacemaker is firing as it should. He was briefly gone, but very quickly regained consciousness, and we were quickly in contact with him. Now he needs to be examined further in the hospital to find out what caused the incident. We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to greet all the players and say that he was okay” Dr Morten Boesen said after the game.
