Trabzonspor fans have taken it to the streets for an ecstatic celebration

Geeks who enjoy a bit of the exotic charm of not so top-notch European football are quite familiar with the names of Turkish greats Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Besiktas. That Istanbul-based trio has dominated their domestic scene ever since the beginnings. Being out of this imaginary circle means you're much more than an underdog.

ATALANTA - SALERNITANA

Alas, Trabzonspor players and coaching staff didn't think so, as they shocked everyone by winning the Turkish Super Lig this season. This highly unexpected title came after not less than 38-years-long hiatus since their previous such achievement dates back to 1983/84.

That's why their fans gathered in the city of Trabzon - the port at the Black Sea - during the weekend for an all-day-long celebration. It was frantic, ecstatic, even lunatic. As passionate as it gets.

According to Hurriyet, the 800,000 population of the city had tripled days before the match, with fans flocking to the province via personal vehicles, flights, or intercity buses.

Two giant screens were erected at the city's two main agoras, with thousands watching the match breathlessly.

With the final whistle from the referee, the city turned into a carnival zone with people celebrating the trophy with chants and local dances, such as "horon" and "kolbasti."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the team’s president, Ali Agaoglu, the players and the coach, Abdullah Avci, to congratulate them.
