The injury is worse than it appeared in the first place
Barcelona is dealing with a lot of injury problems at the start of this season. Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been out for a while, and Alejandro Balde, Fermín Lopez, and Lamine Yamal are also sidelined. Now Gavi has joined them, though the young midfielder’s absence will be much longer. He got injured during an individual action in training, with no contact from teammates. Initial forecasts suggested the injury wasn’t too serious, but it turned out surgery would be necessary, and the recovery is expected to last five months, the club confirmed on its website.
🗣️ Hansi Flick: "Gavi’s injury is not easy because he brings us a lot of quality. But we will all help him get back to his level. He is very young, has his whole career ahead of him, and it’s important that he focuses on that." pic.twitter.com/HiQFkWSjQY

At first, Barça hoped after the initial tests that the break would only be five or six weeks. However, it turned out the meniscus was in much worse condition, making surgery unavoidable. Gavi is expected to return to the pitch no earlier than February, or even March, if the Catalan giants decide to be extra cautious with one of their most important players. What is worrying is the fact that Gavi injured the same leg as last year. The Spanish international then missed nearly a year due to a torn ACL. At just 21 years old, he has now suffered two major injuries in two years, which is what concerns Barcelona’s medical staff the most.
In the end, neither physiotherapy nor injections helped. This injury comes at a time when the young midfielder was in excellent form, having played in five matches across all competitions and scored two goals, both in the win over Valencia. His breakthrough into the squad and increasingly mature play had made him an important asset in Flick’s rotation. Now that rotation is even thinner than before. This could mean more minutes for Marc Bernal, though the club is also considering promoting someone from La Masia.
