Brandt scored a 30-meter stunner to end the game 2-0 for the hosts
Slowly but surely, Borussia Dortmund are crawling up the Bundesliga table, and the goal of the season, to reach the Champions League spot, is within grasp: with a 2-0 win against relegation strugglers Herta, the Millionaires occupy fifth place, only a point below Frankfurt.
It was a well-deserved victory, and the hosts had a number of chances to increase the final score, but in the end, they stopped at two. It was one of those rare matches in which Erling Haaland didn’t score and even didn’t have much impact. The Norwegian has currently scored 32 times in 34 Bundesliga appearances but didn’t increase the number in this match. Dortmund maintained their impressive home record since Edin Terzic took over as manager, as they are now unbeaten in the last eight home games (winning five). BVB also remained undefeated against Hertha in the last eight league encounters between the teams (six wins, two draws).
As expected, Dortmund’s midfield was far superior, and it felt in the first half especially, when the hosts had over 70% of possession, yet it didn’t result in any goals. Captain Marco Reus missed two opportunities, and Bellingham had a chance of the match, but Hertha’s keeper made a superb one-hand save. And then, in the second half, Julian Brandt decided to send a „bomb“ from 30 meters, and while the ball went straight to Jarstein, the Hertha goalkeeper somehow managed to miss it and to his embarrassment, went into the net for the lead and for the future TV highlights:
Borussia continued in the same rhythm until the end, but Dahoud and Can missed their chances, but the teenage sensation Youssoufa Moukoko came in and it took him 8 minutes to score for the final 2-0 win. Already the youngest goalscorer in the Bundesliga's history, Moukoko managed to score his first goal at the Signal Iduna Park.
With a surprise Augsburg win against Borussia Monchengladbach, Herta is now eight points from safety and remains level with Mainz, who occupies the playoff sport with 21 points. It will be a tight relegation battle for Hertha.
