Veteran Nzoia Sugar midfielder lets his assistant, Katasi to lead the team

Long-serving Nzoia Sugar captain Peter Gin has revealed why he is amusingly phobic to the armband.

The defensive midfielder rarely puts on the armband, instead, delegates the skipper's role to his youthful assistant and goalkeeper Humprey Katasi.

Gin who joined Nzoia in 2012 from lower-tier side Bukembe FC was named the captain the same year but in a rare gesture of selfishness, the former Kanduyi FC player has been taking the back seat as far as team leadership is concerned in recent years.

This season, Gin has worn the armband once in their one-all draw against Western Stima in January.

The towering midfielder disclosed that he elected his assistant to call the shots rather than self as a way of mentoring him and preparing him to be one of the greatest goalkeeper captains in the league.

" I have led the team for a long period and it is only fair if I groom my assistant. He wears the armband and attends all captains' meetings with my blessings. My decision doesn't mean that I have been deserting my responsibilities or I am too busy, it's a way of mentoring him and preparing him to be a leader in this team or his next workstation," he said.

Besides mentoring his assistant, Gin said he was assisting the technical bench in molding the fast-rising defensive midfielders duo of Daniel Musamali and Harambee Stars trialist Kevin Juma to adapt to life in the top flight.

Gin who once turned down offers from Gor Mahia, Zoo FC and Kakamega Homeboyz says he has no plan to switch his allegiance any time soon.

"I have served Nzoia for almost a decade and I don't see myself leaving anytime soon unless I get a good offer. I once refused to join Gor in 2017 and I have no regrets for turning them down. I am loyal to Nzoia," he added.
