Battered Marseille must beat Nice to keep their Champions League hopes alive
Sunday night at the Stade Velodrome (9.45 pm) brings more than just a derby - it brings urgency, pressure, and a shrinking margin for error. Olympique Marseille host OGC Nice in the Mediterranean clash with one clear objective: keep their UEFA Champions League dream alive.
Marseille's stumble last weekend - a 2-0 defeat to Lorient - has left them with little room to manoeuvre. Dropped points at this stage of the season don't just hurt, they linger. And now, chasing a top-four finish, OM are in a position where anything but victory risks derailing their European ambitions.
The task, however, is far from straightforward. Habib Beye must navigate this must-win encounter without key attacking options Amine Gouiri and Igor Paixao, which is a blow that strips Marseille of both creativity and cutting edge in the final third.
Problems extend deeper, too. Defensive absences, including Nayef Aguerd, CJ Egan-Riley and Geoffrey Kondogbia, limit flexibility at the back, even if a three-man defence remains intact. Bilal Nadir is also sidelined, while a potential shake-up in midfield could see Tochukwu Nnadi handed a starting role ahead of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
If Marseille arrive under pressure, Nice come with a different kind of momentum. After a season disrupted by injuries, the squad available to Claude Puel is finally stabilising. Only Moise Bombito and Mohamed Abdelmonem are expected to miss out, giving Nice rare depth heading into a crucial fixture.
That depth could prove decisive. Dante, approaching the end of his career, may not feature from the start, underlining the competition for places in defence. In midfield, Tanguy Ndombele has seen increased involvement in recent weeks but is likely to begin on the bench as Nice opt for a balanced 3-5-2 system.
And while Marseille are chasing Europe, Nice are fighting a different battle, creating distance from the relegation play-off zone. Their motivations may differ, but the stakes are no less significant.
For OM, though, everything points to one conclusion: this is a night where only a win will do. Anything less, and their Champions League hopes could begin to slip beyond reach.
