Eintracht Frankfurt deservedly took all three points, 1-2 in Dortmund
Dortmund had the chance to get back in the battle for the Champions League spot but their closest rival for such table placement - Eintracht Frankfurt - did not allow for their 4th place to be taken away. At Signal Iduna Park (Westfalen Stadium) 1-2 for the guests from Frankfurt.
It didn't take long for the Eagles to take the lead. It was an own goal in the 11th minute - an unlucky moment for Nico Schulz, who tried to clear a cross inside the goal box but headed the ball behind his own keeper.
Dortmund were determined to level the score. Haaland had a couple of opportunities but the form he was in during the international break (3 games - 0 goals) continued in this match.
The best one for him in the first 45, happened in the 23rd minute. Haaland received a killer pass inside the box and tried his shot from close range. Unluckily for him, it flew just wide of the left post.
The home team managed to get their equalizer in the 45th minute. Matts Hummels reacted cunningly in the opposite box and sent the ball inside the net from close range.
After Manuel Grafe sounded the second-half time mark, Dortmund came out a bit reserved. Eintracht had numerous chances but they lacked that finishing pass and shot to convert those opportunities into a new lead.
In the 52nd minute, Japanese international Daichi Kamada almost got into in a promising position, but the through ball by Luka Jovic from just inside the box was intercepted.
A minute after that, Filip Kostic raced through the centre to the edge of the box then let fly with a low shot that flew a whisker wide of the right post.
The guests could have been rewarded with the second goal, but Stefan Ilsanker's header was disallowed by VAR due to offside in the 66th minute.
Moments later Haaland almost scored - opposition couldn't get near him, as he took a shot inside the box. The effort looked goalbound but veers just wide of the right post at the last second.
Eintracht eventually materialized all those chances. In the 87th minute, Filip Kostic showcased his great technique and produced a beautiful lofted cross into the box. Andre Silva met the ball and got himself onto the scoresheet with a header into the bottom right corner - 22nd goal for the Portuguese and a second assist today for the Serbian.
Eintracht Frankfurt are Champions-League-bound and 7 points ahead of their today's rivals. Borussia can slowly get used to playing the second-best European club competition - Europa League - in their next campaign.
