The Amsterdamers are still a force to be reckoned with

The biggest club outside of the 'top five' league. Despite lacking top competition in the country - Ajax are still powerful and they confirmed that today by surpassing the national transfer record by almost 10 million euros. Steven Bergwijn returned to the Eredivisie and became the most expensive player in the history of Dutch football, as the Amsterdamers paid a compensation of 31,250,000 euros for the 24-year-old Tottenham winger.

Everything is transparently published on the club website. The entire compensation is fixed, and the player has a contract until 2027. Bergwijn thus broke Sebastian Haller's record, which at one time cost 22.5 million euros. The next two most expensive transfers are from Ajax: David Neres (17.4 million euros) and Miralem Sulejmani (16.25 million euros). Only then comes the most expensive PSV transfer - 14 million euros.

Bergwijn is far ahead of everyone else, even though he hasn't done well in the Premier League. That is why he insisted on returning to the Eredivisie, although according to media reports, the Spurs had offers from Manchester United and Everton of 40 million euros each. It was not worth it, Bergwijn wanted to return to the city of his birth, because although he made a name for himself in the PSV jersey, he spent six years in Ajax's youth academy, playing in a class with Donnie van de Beek and Abdelhak Nouri, among others.

He then moved to Eindhoven and made a name for himself there: in 149 matches for PSV, he scored 31 and set up another 41 goals. In Tottenham, he was not so successful, although he scored eight goals with eight assists. Bergwijn wanted more, and Ajax welcomed a record signing.

They are still influential and powerful. Very powerful.
