"He recently extended his contract and is motivated to work," points out Bayer's sporting director Simon Rolfes
The excellent results he recorded this season with Bayer Leverkusen - seven wins and one draw in all competitions - drew attention to Xabi Alonso. Media in Spain announce the return of the former midfielder to Real Madrid, where he began his coaching career working with the younger categories. As things stand, Carlo Ancelotti will take over the Brazilian national team in the summer, and according to Radio Marca, Florentino Perez sees the 41-year-old Basque as the best replacement for the trophy-winning Italian.
Real's intention to bring Alonso back into their ranks will not be easy to materialize, however, as he extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen until the summer of 2026 at the beginning of August.
This fact is pointed out by the sports director of the German club, Simon Rolfes, when answering questions about the future of the Spanish coach in front of journalists.
"Just a few weeks ago he extended his contract, so I'm relaxed. He did it because he knows he's part of the big project we have. He has a very good team, coaching staff and full support from everyone at the club. That motivates him to work, like everything those of us who work with him, and I think it's the same among the players. That's why he extended his contract and is completely dedicated to his work. That's enough for us," claims Rolfes.
They seem pretty calm in Leverkusen although it wouldn't be a surprise if Xabi Alonso returns to Madrid.
"There are rumors and that's fine, they appear often, but if all the rumors were true, we wouldn't have half of the players in the team we have today," says Bayer's director.
Alonso himself spoke before the match with Mainz (3-0) about the potential takeover of the Real Madrid team.
"It's early, it's only September. I'm focused on the season with Bayer Leverkusen, we've started well and I want all the players to stay focused. When you think long-term in football, then you lose focus on what's closer to you. At the moment, I'm only thinking about what I have here," the young strategist answered diplomatically.
Alonso's and Bayer's next challenge will be a visit to Norway, where Molde welcome them on Thursday in the match of the second round of the Europa League. Considering the form, the players of the German club start their journey with the epithet of big favorites.
