Ronald Koeman's side suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat in a penalty shootout at a major international tournament
For decades, the Netherlands have produced some of football's greatest talents. From Johan Cruyff to Dennis Bergkamp, Arjen Robben and today's generation, the Oranje have thrilled fans with their attacking football. Yet when a knockout match goes to penalties, history tells a completely different story.
Their World Cup Round of 32 defeat to Morocco was not just another heartbreaking elimination – it was the latest chapter in one of international football's most remarkable curses.
After drawing 1-1 over 120 minutes, the Dutch once again failed from the penalty spot, losing the shootout 3-2. It marked the 10th penalty shootout in the nation's history at major international tournaments, with the Netherlands winning only two of them.
The nightmare dates back to Euro 1992, when Denmark stunned the Dutch in the semi-finals before going on to lift the trophy. Four years later, France knocked them out on penalties at Euro 1996, while Euro 2000 brought perhaps the cruelest chapter of all. Playing on home soil, the Netherlands missed a string of penalties against Italy before eventually crashing out in the shootout.
Their first taste of success finally came at Euro 2004, when they edged Sweden on penalties. A decade later came the iconic victory over Costa Rica at the 2014 World Cup, remembered for Louis van Gaal's last-minute decision to substitute goalkeeper Tim Krul specifically for the shootout. The gamble paid off perfectly and briefly suggested the Dutch had finally conquered their greatest fear.
They hadn't.
Argentina eliminated them on penalties in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals, then did it again in the dramatic quarter-finals of Qatar 2022. England got the better of them in the UEFA Nations League, and now Morocco has added another painful entry to the list.

The numbers are staggering. Just two victories from ten penalty shootouts at major tournaments is a record that stands in sharp contrast to the Netherlands' reputation as one of football's traditional powerhouses.
Whether it is pressure, bad luck or simply coincidence, the pattern has become impossible to ignore. Generations have changed, coaches have come and gone, and countless world-class players have stepped up from 12 yards, yet the outcome remains painfully familiar.
Perhaps the most frustrating part for Dutch fans is that these defeats rarely come after being outplayed. More often than not, the Netherlands compete toe-to-toe with elite opponents for 120 minutes, only to see their tournament end in the cruelest way imaginable.
