There were reports that Senegal coach is not happy with his current contract situation
Senegal are preparing for their World Cup participation. On Wednesday morning, the Teranga Lions posted its team had visited the palace of the Senegal president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, followed by photos of squad members at an airport. The team should have boarded the plane to the USA, where they are to play two friendlies, one with the host on June 1st, and the second with Saudi Arabia June 10th. But the flight was delayed as the initial flight, which was scheduled 3.30pm was delayed twice, until 7pm and then until 11pm. This information would be totally irrelevant for any football team as these things often happen, but in this situation, the reason for delay might have been totally different. Various reports stated that the real reason was Pape Thiaw’s decision not to board the plane due to his contact issues.
The Lions of Terranga won the AFON 2025, which was later given to Morocco due to the already known developments at the final game, but the result is still impressive and Thiaw shares the praise for his good work. He took charge of Senegal in December 2024 and his contract expired in February this years, and was not renewed, per reports, which was the reason for his actions.
However, Senegal was quick to deny such reports.
“The FSF categorically denies the unfounded rumours suggesting that the national team manager refused to travel on grounds related to the renegotiation of his contract. Whilst legitimate contractual discussions are ongoing, they have had no impact on the team’s travel schedule. These minor logistical setbacks in no way undermine the cohesion and determination of the players, the technical staff and the federation. The group remains fully united as the Lions approach the important fixtures awaiting them on American soil. The FSF will ensure that the calm atmosphere necessary for excellent preparation is maintained” reads the statement. No matter if the reports were true or not, the public eye is now focused on Senegal.
