Even the two retakes couldn't help the former Tottenham and Fulham centre-forward, Carlos Vinicius, convert the spot-kick in a Copa Sudamericana clash against the Chilean Palestino

Until last night, the case of Martin Palermo was one of a kind. Back in July 1999, in the Copa America group stage game, the famous Boca Juniors striker took three penalty kicks for Argentina against Colombia and missed all of them - the first hit the bar, the second went over it, and the third was saved by the keeper - setting a Guinness world record, which no player has managed to match to this day.

However, last night, the popular Loco (Crazy in English) got some serious competition, as the striker for Brazilian side Gremio, Carlos Vinicius, also missed three efforts from the spot in a Copa Sudamericana (South American second-tier competition) group stage clash against Chilean Palestino!

Truth be told, two of them were retakes, as the goalie came off his line, so he practically managed to waste one penalty kick three times!

The first two strikes were parried onto the post by the custodian Sebastian Andres Perez Kirby, while the third one was a clear save. Although the pressure after the initial two failures was piling up, Vinicius refused to step aside and let someone else shoot, paying a high price for his stubbornness.

To make matters worse, this bizarre situation in the 17th minute was Gremio's best chance to win the game, which eventually ended in a goalless draw.

Vinicius' career background makes this whole case even stranger. Aged 31, the Brazilian has extensive experience in elite European leagues, having played for prestigious clubs such as Galatasaray, Monaco, Tottenham, PSV Eindhoven, Benfica, and Fulham.

Still, it just wasn't his day, and, unfortunately for him, football fans won't let it slide and be easily forgotten.
