Title race is a forbidden subject in Marseille

Olympique has four consecutive league win and can overtake PSG at the table

Since 2011, Olympique Marseille has won only twice in La Classique: in 2020 in Ligue 1, in a stadium with reduced capacity due to Covid, and in 2023 in the Coupe de France. Finally, this season they managed to defeat PSG. After that impressive victory, Roberto De Zerbi’s men continued with their great displays: The defeated Strasbourg and Metz in Ligue 1 and Ajax in the Champions League. If we add Lorient before PSG, Marseille are in a series of four consecutive victories in the league - a first since December 2023 - and are in second place in the standings, just behind PSG. The logical question is – can Olympique challenge the Parisian for the title this season?

Marseille are sitting only two points behind PSG who surprisingly drew with Strasbourg on Friday and with today’s win against Le Havre, they can be at the top of League 1. But the African defender and the match winner in La Classique is not thinking about it.

"We have to take it match by match; it's a bit early to draw conclusions. The first objective is to qualify for the Champions League. Marseille deserves to play in the Champions League every year. I can't answer that question; it's still too early" said Nayef Aguerd.

Marseille fans are waiting for a trophy of any kind, yet alone the title, as their last win was in the League Cup in 2012. But coach De Zerbi simply doesn’t want to go to the slippery field of title hope.

"I don't think I ever mentioned the title, even last season. My players don't talk about the title. Not because they don't dream of it, but because PSG has won most of the trophies, dominated Europe, and reached the Club World Cup final. Their level is very high. Dreaming is something else. And I tell you, we all dream of it. But talking about it is like selling smoke..." said the Italian.
