The Ballon d'Or winner and Al-Ittihad boss don't see eye to eye
Karim Benzema would be a star player for most teams in the world. But not for Saudi Pro League title holders Al-Ittihad and their head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Yes, you read that right.
A few days ago, shocking news broke out that former Celtic winger Jota was about to leave Al-Ettihad barely a month after jumping on the Saudi bandwagon. Well, the latest reports coming out of the mighty popular Jeddah club are even more astonishing. According to local newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, sources from within the club claim that the tension between Benzema and Espirito Santo is unbearable - and it's all because the former Real Madrid star "won't fit in in his coach's system of play".
According to these sources, coach Espirito Santo made it clear that Benzema did not fit his philosophy and did not ask the club to sign him. The former Olympique Lyonnais wonderkid complained to the Saudi negotiator Saad Al-Latheef -- who convinced him to come to Saudi Arabia -- that he was uneasy and that the Portuguese coach was treating him unprofessionally.
Benzema demanded that he should be made team captain - a request Espirito Santo refused, naming Brazilian Romarinho and Ahmed Sharahili ahead of the 2021 Ballon d'Or laureate.

The Frenchman has yet to score a league goal for his new club. He wants his situation resolved. He was clearly made some big promises when he arrived in the Middle East - promises Espirito Santo wasn't aware of. As a result, there is now a power struggle between the head coach and the team's biggest star.
