Tusker FC chairman Charles Gacheru has revealed that the demand for Austria-bound forward Ryan Ogam skyrocketed over the past month following his impressive performances during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament hosted in Kenya.

Ogam was one of Kenya’s standout performers at CHAN, scoring twice against Morocco and Zambia and having a third goal against Madagascar controversially disallowed as Harambee Stars reached the quarterfinals before exiting the continental showpiece.

The biennial tournament reserved for players playing in their domestic league competitions was eventually won by Morocco, with a 3-2 victory over Madagascar at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The Brewers’ forward has now played his final game for Tusker and will join Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC for an undisclosed period, linking up with his new club after the international break.

Interest in Ogam came from clubs in Sweden, Norway, Algeria, Morocco, Libya, and the UAE, among others, before he opted for the European move.

Gacheru admitted the past few weeks had been overwhelming, with multiple agents reaching out regarding the player.

“My phone has been blowing up with agents sending all kinds of offers; everyone wants Ryan,” Gacheru told NTV.

He added that during the CHAN tournament, all transfer discussions were handled with Ogam’s father, David Rabok, a former Gor Mahia and Nairobi City player, so that the striker could focus on the competition without distractions.

“During CHAN, I only sent Ogam messages wishing him well. We never discussed contracts. I handled all negotiations with his father. We met, devised a plan, and asked ourselves, “What is best for Ryan?” Gacheru

explained.

After extensive consultations, all parties agreed that a move to Austria would best support Ogam’s career development and help him reach his full potential as a striker.

“We worked through this process over the last two weeks and reached a decision that we believe is best for Ryan, one that will allow him to realise his full potential,” Gacheru added.

A visibly excited Ogam, who chose not to reveal specifics, confirmed he would announce his next club after the international break.

“We have made a decision, and after the next two games, it will be clear what my next step will be,” he said.

An alumnus of Dagoretti High School, Ogam joined Tusker from Rainbow FC before the start of last season. Initially a midfielder, he was converted to a striker by coach Charles Okere, a move that paid off as he scored 15 goals in 13 league games before an injury cut his season short, finishing just two goals shy of top scorer Moses Shumah.

Ogam has also previously played for Dubai Falcons in the UAE.
