Borussia won in Milan to secure the first place in Group of Death

Before round 5 in Group F, Paris Saint-Germain had a chance to secure their place in the last 16 for a 12th successive season with a win against Newcastle and with Dortmund's win in Milano against AC Milan. And the Germans did their part, with another impressive win in Europe (3-1 in Milan), their third in a row, but the Parisians will have to wait until the last round. Luis Enrique and his team were on the brink of a shocking defeat in Paris until the 97th minute, but a VAR penalty allowed Mbappe to secure a valuable draw (1-1) and give the Parisians a proper chance. Still, since this is the 'Group of Death', nothing is secure. In the last round, PSG needs to win in Dortmund to secure the next faze. Every other result would mean that they would depend on the Newcastle – Milan score. The only secure team from this group is Dortmund, who won 3-1 and is going to the second phase of UEFA's most popular competition.

PSG have won eight of their last 10 home Champions League games, losing only to Bayern Munich, but the injury crippled Newcastle nearly made a shocking win. It was Tino Livramento's handball deep into injury time which prevented the Magpies to secure their place in the Top 16, so they will need a win at home against AC Milan. As expected, PSG were offensive and dominant from the start of the game and it looked like it's just of matter of time before they score. They had their best chance in the 9th minute, when best friends Hakimi and Mbappe teamed up for the goal, but Pope saved with his legs a wonderful backhell attempt from PSG captain.

Magpies should have scored in the 12th minute, but Isak missed from three meters. However, that was forgotten minutes later when he tapped in the rebound after Donnarumma saved Almiron's shot. Dembele looked lively and had one good opportunity, but Pope was again there, as Schar was in injury time to deny Dembele again. PSG tightened the grip in the second half, and had couple of good chances, from Mbappe to Barcola, Enrique made changes unlike Howe, who had a couple of 17-year old boys on the bench, but Livramento's handball gave the Parisians a lifeline.

Milan started brightly and earned the penalty kick after only five minutes (Schlotterbeck handballed), but Kobel saved Giroud's shot. Dortmund on the other hand didn't miss their penalty, which was awarded three minutes later after Calabria's challenge on Bynoe-Gittens. Reus was precise and the guests took the lead and had two more good chances before they were punished for their misses. Chukwueze ran into the box and finish with the ball into the bottom corner. Home fans had some hope at the start of the second half, but Borussia scored decisive goals in the right time and secured a win and the Round 16 qualification. Bynoe-Gittens took a precise shot past Maignan in the 59th minute, and just 10 minutes later Sabitzer passed the ball to Karim Adeyemi, who scored his first goal in five matches after critiques for his work rate in recent weeks.
