UEL FINAL: King of the Europa League eyes a fifth crown - Freiburg as the last obstacle

Unai Emery is chasing an incredible fifth Europa League title, but standing in his way in Istanbul is a Freiburg side eager to pull off a major upset

Aston Villa and Freiburg will battle for Europa League glory on Wednesday evening, with Istanbul’s Tupras Stadyumu set to stage the biggest match of their respective seasons.

For Freiburg, this is uncharted territory. The German side are appearing in the first UEFA final in their history and have the opportunity to lift the first major trophy in the club’s 122-year existence.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, are chasing a return to European greatness. The Birmingham club famously conquered Europe in 1982 when they defeated Bayern Munich to win the European Cup, but they have not reached another continental final since then. Under Unai Emery, they now have a chance to write another memorable chapter.

Villa head into the final full of confidence after securing a top-five finish in the Premier League, sealing their place in next season’s Champions League with an emphatic 4-2 victory over Liverpool at Villa Park.

Emery’s side had to show resilience in the semifinals, overturning a first-leg deficit against Nottingham Forest to book their place in Istanbul. Prior to that, they impressed throughout the competition, finishing second in the league phase before eliminating Lille and Bologna.

Freiburg’s road to the final has been equally impressive. Julian Schuster’s team advanced directly to the knockout rounds and then overcame Genk, Celta Vigo and Braga to set up a historic showdown with the Villans.

Both clubs have plenty at stake. Villa are aiming to end a 30-year wait for a major trophy, while Freiburg are hoping to complete a fairytale by claiming the first significant silverware in their history. Much of the spotlight will once again fall on Emery, whose record in this competition is unmatched.

The Spanish tactician has already won the Europa League four times — three consecutive triumphs with Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016, followed by another success with Villarreal in 2021 after defeating Manchester United on penalties.

The only blemish on his remarkable Europa League resume came in 2019, when his Arsenal side lost the final to Chelsea.

Wednesday’s showdown will be Emery’s sixth Europa League final in just 12 years, and victory would deliver an unprecedented fifth title in the competition. Despite his extraordinary success, Emery has dismissed suggestions that his past achievements guarantee anything.

"I am not a king in this competition," he said. "I am now here with Aston Villa in a new chapter. Everything I did is done and of course it's there in that moment but with it I am not winning. If you are not respecting the opponent, you are closer to losing. If you are not respecting Europe, like we did during the process, we are not here. This is the strong mentality we had before. We have a huge challenge, a huge challenge. Are we thinking about the next party on Friday? No, no."

Emery’s record in the Europa League is staggering. Across 115 matches in the competition, he has won 71, with his best success rate coming this season with Aston Villa, where he has guided the club to victory in 85.7 percent of their Europa League games.

On one side stands a club dreaming of its greatest-ever night. On the other is a manager who has made this tournament his personal domain.

In Istanbul, either Freiburg will complete a historic underdog story, or Unai Emery will strengthen his reputation as the undisputed master of the Europa League.
