Uganda players on strike just two days before their 2025 AFCON opening game?!

According to the information from their camp, the Uganda Cranes skipped a training session scheduled for yesterday afternoon because of financial disagreements with their FA

Last month, just a day before their key clash in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Gabon, Nigeria national team players boycotted a training session due to unpaid allowances and bonuses. Now, a similar situation is unfolding in the Uganda ranks.

Namely, only three days before their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations opening clash against Tunisia (Tuesday, 23.00), the Uganda Cranes have abruptly skipped a training session scheduled for yesterday afternoon. The reason? Finances, of course.

According to Ugandan NBS Sport, the crew demanded payment of outstanding allowances they were due for qualifying for the continental tournament, as well as clarity on financial terms ahead of the AFCON.

As a warning, they didn't show up for the training session mentioned above, despite the head coach, Paul Put, and his staff arriving at the venue and preparing everything for practice. About half an hour later, the Belgian tactician and his assistants left without a clear explanation, NBS Sport claimed.

Neither the team nor the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) reportedly issued a statement on the situation.

The Nigerians mentioned in the first paragraph ultimately managed to beat Gabon, but failed to achieve their goal, losing all chances to qualify for the following World Cup.

As for Uganda, they could learn a lot from the Super Eagles' example, pull together, and try to make the best out of their first AFCON appearance since 2019 - or they could throw it out the window. The choice is only theirs.

Following the duel against Tunisia, the Uganda Cranes will face Tanzania (December 27, 20.30) and Nigeria (December 30, 19.00) in Group C. The top two teams in each group, as well as four of the six best third-placed sides, will advance to the Round of 16.
