Manchester United line up Aurelien Tchouameni as their next midfield cornerstone, yet Los Blancos see him as untouchable
Manchester United are scanning the market for a new midfield anchor, and Aurelien Tchouameni has quietly emerged as a serious option. Whether anything comes of it, however, may depend less on Old Trafford ambition and more on Real Madrid's own plans.
The 26-year-old has been a constant presence in Madrid's midfield since arriving in an €80 million move from Monaco in 2022, effectively stepping into the role vacated by Casemiro - ironically now a key figure at Manchester United.
While Tchouameni's time in Spain has had its uneven moments, this season he has reasserted himself as one of the team's most reliable performers.
That hasn't gone unnoticed. With Casemiro expected to move on very soon, United are weighing up potential replacements, and the Frenchman features on their shortlist. According to reports, he is viewed as an alternative to top target Elliot Anderson, although Nottingham Forest's hefty €115 million valuation has complicated that route.
Still, any move for the Frenchman appears far from straightforward. The sense in Madrid is that Tchouameni remains a key part of the club's long-term structure. Even if a new midfielder arrives, the intention would be to complement him and not replace him. In fact, the player more likely to be sacrificed for the right price is Eduardo Camavinga.
Tchouameni's importance has only grown during a turbulent campaign for Los Blancos. Alongside Thibaut Courtois, he has been one of the few consistent pillars in an otherwise uneven season, and his absence, whether through injury, suspension, or rotation, has been clearly felt.
There is, however, one factor that could eventually force a decision. With just two years remaining on his current deal, Real Madrid will soon have to choose: tie him down to a new contract, or at least consider the possibility of a sale while his value remains high.
For now, United are watching closely, but unless something shifts in Madrid, this is a move that may prove far easier to discuss than to execute.
