
Vihiga crash New Generations in CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Zone qualifiers opener

The Kenyan girls will take on AS Kigali Women from Rwanda in the second game
Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League champions Vihiga Queens had a dream start in the CAF Women’s Champions League – CECAFA Zone qualifiers after humbling New Generations FC from Zanzibar 3-1 in a group B game staged at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Kampala.
Vihiga, had to do it the hard way however, rallying from a goal down to dispatch the Generations who took the lead early in the game.
Generations breached the Vihiga defence and put the ball in the net in the 20th minute through Amina Hemed.
Ugandan international Winnie Babirye drew Vihiga level in the 38th minute, a goal that proved instrumental for the Kenyan girls as it all what they needed to tilt the tie in their favour.
Centre back Ruth Khasoha grabbed the lead for Vihiga in the 59th minute Martha Amunyolet making it three for the Charles Okere-coached side from the spot.
Vihiga were awarded the spot kick after Anitah Namata who had come in the second half for Tumaini Nafula was fouled in the area.
Vihiga won the ticket to play in the qualifiers by virtue of being the league champions.
The four-time champions beat Gaspo to the league gong.
The 2021 Zonal champions did not defend their title last year following Kenya’s ban by World Football governing body, FIFA for government interference.
The second Group B match will feature Tanzania Women’s Premier League champions JKT Queens against AS Kigali Women (Rwanda).
Vihiga,will then play AS Kigali Women from Rwanda in the second game before wrapping up their group B matches against JKT Queens from Tanzania.
