Aston Villa produced a brilliant second-half performance on home soil to dismantle Liverpool FC 4–2, boosting their confidence ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League final

A real spectacle unfolded in the second half in Birmingham during the clash between Aston Villa and Liverpool. The home side may have taken the lead in the first half, but what followed after the break was pure entertainment.

In the end, Aston Villa struck four times to secure their ticket to the Champions League and show everyone they are fully prepared to chase Europa League glory. On the other side, Liverpool still have not mathematically secured their own Champions League place and will now have to keep an eye on other results as well.

The first half between Aston Villa and Liverpool started with early intent from the home side, as Ollie Watkins tested the visitors just two minutes into the match. The striker received the ball around 16 meters from goal and decided to shoot, but his effort lacked both power and precision, allowing Mamardashvili to make a comfortable save.

Watkins remained the biggest attacking threat in the opening stages and came close again in the 8th minute after creating space for himself inside the box. However, his shot flew well over the crossbar as Villa failed to capitalize on another promising opportunity.

Despite the lively start, the tempo of the match slowed considerably afterward. For much of the first 25 minutes, both teams enjoyed spells of possession but struggled to create dangerous openings, with play mostly unfolding in midfield areas. Liverpool’s young winger Ngumoha attempted to spark something in the 25th minute with a long-range effort from around 25 meters, but his shot sailed far over the goal.

Liverpool thought they had broken the deadlock in the 27th minute when Ryan Gravenberch fired from distance and forced a poor reaction from Martinez, who spilled the ball into the path of Cody Gakpo. The Dutch forward tapped home, but the celebrations were cut short as the assistant referee raised the flag for offside.

The visitors gradually began to grow into the game and produced their first genuinely dangerous chance in the 31st minute through Szoboszlai. The midfielder unleashed a powerful strike from long range that dipped awkwardly in front of Martinez, but the Villa goalkeeper reacted well to push it away.

Just when it looked as though the first half would end goalless, Aston Villa struck in spectacular fashion in the 42nd minute. Following a cleverly worked corner routine, Morgan Rogers found himself unmarked on the edge of the penalty area and produced a brilliant finish, firing past Mamardashvili to give the hosts a 1–0 lead heading into halftime.

The second half between Aston Villa and Liverpool exploded into life almost immediately, with the visitors finding a way back into the game in the 52nd minute. Following a dangerous free-kick delivery into the box, Virgil van Dijk was left completely unmarked inside the six-yard area and powered a header into the net to make it 1–1. The goal was briefly checked by VAR for a possible offside, but after review it was confirmed as valid.

Liverpool nearly completed the turnaround just four minutes later. Ngumoha created space brilliantly on the edge of the box and unleashed a superb strike from around 20 meters, only to see the ball crash against the post. The rebound fell kindly to Cody Gakpo, who found himself in an excellent position, but the awkward bounce caused him problems and the Dutch forward fired well over the crossbar. That miss proved costly almost immediately.

In the 57th minute, Villa punished Liverpool with a rapid response as Ollie Watkins restored the home side’s lead. Szoboszlai slipped while attempting to control a pass deep inside his own half, allowing Rogers to seize possession before calmly setting up Watkins, who finished confidently past Mamardashvili for 2–1.

Villa almost struck again just 30 seconds later. Watkins found himself nearly one-on-one with Mamardashvili inside the penalty area, but this time the Liverpool goalkeeper reacted superbly to deny the striker.

The pressure from the hosts continued to build as Watkins repeatedly exposed Liverpool’s defensive problems. In the 65th minute, the England forward once again broke through in a dangerous position, only for Liverpool goalie to produce another important save to keep the visitors alive.

Five minutes later, Emiliano Buendia came agonizingly close to extending Villa’s advantage with a sensational strike from the edge of the area. Mamardashvili was beaten by the effort, but the crossbar came to Liverpool’s rescue.

The third goal finally arrived in the 73rd minute, and it felt inevitable. After several dangerous attacks and multiple saves from Mamardashvili, the ball eventually fell once again to Watkins, who made no mistake this time and fired home his second goal of the evening. The finish capped off a dominant spell from Aston Villa and gave the home side a commanding 3–1 advantage as Liverpool’s defensive collapse continued to worsen.

We all thought the game was over and heading toward its conclusion, but then came a beautiful ending courtesy of a brilliant strike from John McGinn, who fired a sensational shot from the edge of the box to give his team a 4–1 lead.

Liverpool refused to give up until the very end, and we saw another goal from Virgil van Dijk in a very similar situation. Following a free-kick cross into the box, the ball found the Dutch defender’s head once again, and he calmly guided it into the net to make it 4–2.
