Villa spoil the party, Chelsea out of Europe, West Ham relegated
Reading Time: 3min | Sun. 24.05.26. | 20:04
Sunderland, Bournemouth and Brighton will also play in Europe next season
There were many calculations before the last round of the Premier League and many of them depended on the score of the meaninful game between Manchester City and Aston Villa. Both clubs earned their Champions League place but Villains’ possible defeat opened the sixht place for England’s club in this competition. Since it was the last game for Guardiola, Stones and Silva, it was expected that they will defeat Villa, but that didn’t happen. The guests made a complete turnover and won 2-1, leaving England with only five spots, and leaving Bournemouth out of the Champions League. In London, the relegation battle ended tragically for West Ham, who defeated Leeds, but Tottenham did the same against Everton and stayed up. Other teams who will play in Europe next season are Bournemouth, Sunderland and Brighton.
Joao Palhinha was a bust in Bayern Munich and was shipped on a loan to Tottenham where he proved to be a relegation savior for Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian recognized him as a warrior needed for a battle to stay up and he first scored a match winner at Wolves and today scored another one for the much needed win over totally uninspired Everton. The Toffies took some valuable points in their away matches but today they just didn’t show up and failed to press the Spurs at all. West Ham faced much more motivated Leeds, who didn’t want just to surrender to the Hammers but the home team produced a win through ValentÃn Castellanos and Jarrod Bowen. Unfortunately, they failed to keep their place in the league as Tottenham won and they will have a lot of squad reshuffling to do as they prepare for the Championship.
At the Eithad, Semenyo scored the opening goal and everyone thought that this was just the beginning of an easy win, but Ollie Watkins thought different. Villa players didn’t show up in the first half, but their striker scored a brace in the space of 14 minutes and surprisigly defeated the second-placed team in the Premier League. Another suprise of the day was Chelsea’s defeat at Sunderland, which left them out of Europe completely. The Blues’ complete meltdown ended at the Stadum of Light, where the hosts ended their excellent season, where they came from the Championship and secured European football immediately. Brighton had a chance to finish higher up as the hosted the Manchester United team which didn’t need any points, but the Seagulls played probably the worst game of the season and ended up losing 3-0. Bruno Fernandes finally assisted for the first goal, thus becoming the new Premier League record-holder in assist for a single season (21).
