Wenger gives his opinion on Arsenal's title chase

The Frenchman is still the last coach to win the Premier League with the Gunners

The last man to win the Premier League title with Arsenal FC was the legendary Arsene Wenger. Back in 2004, the iconic Frenchman led the club to glory—and since then, nothing but a long drought. For over 20 years, Arsenal’s trophy cabinet has lacked the league title, and now, when they are in their best position in decades, everything risks slipping away in the final five rounds. Manchester City defeated Arsenal 2–1 at the Etihad Stadium, meaning that if Pep Guardiola’s side win all remaining matches, they will be champions. That would be a brutal blow for the North London team, who could end up with zero trophies despite being in contention for four just a month ago.

This collapse has shaken even Wenger, who still closely follows the club where he became a legend. The defeat at the Etihad was Arsenal’s fourth consecutive loss in domestic competitions, seriously damaging their title hopes. Although they spent most of the season at the top, City can now overtake them with a win in their game in hand against Burnley FC. Despite being knocked out of the FA Cup and the League Cup, Arsenal are still chasing their first league title since 2004—and they remain alive in the UEFA Champions League, where they will face Atlético Madrid in the semifinals. Speaking at a charity event at Abbey Road Studios, Wenger expressed belief that Arsenal can still win the title. He argued it’s unlikely City will finish the season perfectly and praised the team’s attacking players:

I believe Arsenal will win the title. I truly believe it. It feels logical. I like how Eberechi Eze, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, and Noni Madueke are playing. Manchester City will not have a perfect finish—they cannot win every game” said the Frenchman.

Wenger remains the eternal optimist—but Mikel Arteta is far more cautious:

This is a very disappointing result, and the way it happened in Manchester. We played very well, gave everything, came back after going behind. Emotionally we controlled the game and had them where we wanted. We had good chances but didn’t take them—that made the difference.” Now Arsenal no longer control their own destiny. They must hope City drop points. What Arteta built over months now hangs in the balance.
