What a mistake, man! Former Arsenal star admits he left Gunners because of his girl

Emanuel Petit reveals he left Highbury in 2000 due to his ex-wife's dislike for the rainy weather in London

"Sometimes, the grass is not greener somewhere else".

That's what Emanuel Petit claims today, reminiscing about his Arsenal departure in 2000. The World Cup and EURO 2000 winner with France left the Gunners after three successful seasons at Highbury to continue his career at Barcelona.

The former versatile midfielder, who could occupy a handful of defensive roles, too, opened up about the decision to say goodbye to his compatriot Arsene Wenger and the North Londoners.

And the reason for the transfer - in his own words - was his then-girlfriend.

She couldn't stand the rainy weather in London, and Barcelona offered much more in those terms.

"I always loved Barcelona and Real Madrid. It was great to be part of one of the biggest clubs in the world, but... I definitely should have stayed with Arsenal. You know, sometimes the grass is not greener somewhere else. It's better to stay where you receive love and happiness and you're successful. Why are you leaving?

"Big regret, definitely. If I could turn the clock back, I would probably make a different decision," concluded Petit.

Not only did the Frenchman stay just a single season at Camp Nou before returning to London (signing a contract with Chelsea), but his marriage also didn't last. The couple divorced just two years later, in 2002.
