Why AFC Leopards chairman aspirant withdrew from race to support Ambani

Former AFC Leopards chairperson aspirant Ronald Namai has disclosed why he withdrew from the race and threw his weight behind Boniface Ambani.

Namai was one of the aspirants who were eyeing the position, and one of the only three that remained in the race in the last month before the election, but was surprisingly missing from the list of candidates cleared ahead of the polls.

In the election that will be conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), only ex-Kenyan international Ambani and Enos Mutokah have been cleared for the top seat.

In an interview with Mozzart Sport, Namai stated his reason for pulling out of the race.

“I did not present myself for clearance by the IEBC due to personal reasons. After deep reflection, I found that my situation could not allow me to continue with the process,” said Namai.

Namai went ahead to explain that the decision was tough for him, and he is now taking time to explain to his supporters.

“Sometimes in life, you have to make unpopular decisions even to yourself, and that is exactly what happened. My fans are extremely disappointed, and I have been forced to hold meetings with them to explain, including on Wednesday, 18 June,” he added.

After his withdrawal, Namai threw his weight behind Ambani, and he took time to explain why he settled for the former Harambee Stars striker.

“We have a shared vision. We want to have a successful season as early as possible. As a priority, we all want to get Leopards to win trophies, including ending the FKF Premier League drought,” he noted.

Secondly, Namai termed Ambani as a passionate leader, an attribute that both share as a reason to back his candidature.

“Ambani has proven his passion in his previous managerial roles with Soy United and Mara Sugar, an attribute that the current regime is lacking, leading to their failure,” he stated.

Ingwe will head to the polls on Sunday, 29 June at the Stadion Hotel Ballroom to elect a new Executive Office that includes a chairperson, their vice, Secretary General, and treasurer.
