Kakamega Homeboyz captain Moses Mudavadi believes the club’s impressive away form could prove decisive in their bid for a maiden FKF Premier League title, as the Patrick Odhiambo-coached side continues to lead a tightly contested 2025/26 campaign.

The Kakamega-based outfit returned to the summit of the standings on Sunday after edging AFC Leopards 1-0 at Nyayo Stadium.

The victory lifted Homeboyz to the top on goal difference, as both Leopards and Tusker FC are also sitting on 24 points.

Homeboyz’ performances on the road have been particularly encouraging this season.

They have suffered just two away defeats, against Mathare United and Gor Mahia, while registering wins over AFC Leopards, APS Bomet and Sofapaka, in addition to several hard-fought draws.

Mudavadi, the club’s longest-serving player, believes that consistency away from home has positioned Homeboyz firmly in the title race, noting that the championship remains wide open.

“The way the league standings are currently gives us a lot of motivation,” said the veteran midfielder. “Our next match is away and we are confident because we have generally been performing well on the road.

The title race is very open. If you look at the top seven teams, any of them can win it. We are in the mix and we believe we can go all the way and win our first title.”

Homeboyz came agonisingly close to lifting the league crown in the 2021/22 season under then-coach Bernard Mwalala, leading for much of the campaign before losing the title to Tusker FC on goal difference.

That season was later nullified by the Football Kenya Federation following administrative changes, but Mudavadi admits the disappointment still lingers.

“Looking back to when Tusker won the league on goal difference, it really hurt us and we want to make things right,” he added. “There are some matches this season that we deserved to win-and by now we could have been on 30 points.”

Reflecting on the narrow win over AFC Leopards, Mudavadi said motivation levels were high for what is traditionally a fiercely contested fixture.

“AFC Leopards versus Kakamega Homeboyz is always a derby, the Ingo Derby,” he said. “We were fully aware of that when we travelled from Kakamega. The players and the technical bench were highly motivated and determined to get maximum points.”

Homeboyz now turn their attention to another tough away assignment, with a trip to Mombasa to face Bandari FC next on the schedule.
