They found irregularities in the club when concluding a new contract in October 2020

During the entire transfer window, the management of Barcelona "wages a war" with Frankie de Jong. The Blaugrana first tried to sell him to Manchester United, but the Dutchman rejected a move to Old Trafford. Then Barca asked him to agree to a salary reduction in order to register expensive reinforcements "behind his back" - even though the club already owes him around 20 million euros!? - to which the 25-year-old, as expected, also did not agree.

But at the Nou Camp they decided to force the situation to their own advantage, they found a new way to try to force De Jong to one of the two aforementioned options. The Catalan soap opera is getting a sequel, and what a sequel it is... As reported by the well-informed Athletic, Barcelona are threatening to sue their footballer!

Yes, you read that right. According to the aforementioned source, the Catalan club has informed De Jong that they want to cancel his current contract and reactivate his old one, with the explanation that during the extension of the contract agreed with the previous administration led by Josep Maria Bartomeu, there were certain irregularities and that there are grounds for taking legal actions against the two parties involved in the agreement.

According to reports from Spain, Athletic adds, Barcelona informed the Dutch midfielder on July 15 that the club's administration encountered evidence of criminal activities during the negotiation of the new contract signed on October 20, when Gerard Pique, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Clemont Lenglet also agreed to a 'financial sacrifice'.

The intention of the letter that Barcelona sent to Frankie was to inform him of the existence of irregularities in the contract, and that the club is able to initiate criminal proceedings to determine what exactly happened and who is responsible for the illegal actions. However, despite not ruling out the possibility of a lawsuit against the player, the Catalan club is ready to settle with him regarding the financial conditions that make them want to get rid of him.
