Nathan Redmond leaves Southampton for a Turkish adventure, with the legendary David Beckham encouraging him to test himself in another country

Turkish champions Besiktas pulled off another coup in signing English winger Nathan Redmond from Southampton on a one-year deal. The 28-year-old will get his first taste of football outside England following his six-year association with the Saints.

Redmond received positive feedback from his compatriot and fellow Black Eagle Alli and the legendary David Beckham, whom he met at the airport by accident.

"I'm very excited as it will be a new challenge in my career. I'm at a great club. I've heard before about how great the stadium and the fans are. We spoke to Dele Alli. He told me about the atmosphere here, the interest of the fans, and that he feels terrific here. Our coach also said that there is a very close family atmosphere here. My family and I are looking forward to it. And David Beckham said that he had some of the best times of his career playing outside England, with AC Milan and Real Madrid. He gave me some advice and told me to enjoy this new chapter of my career."

The skilful midfielder, who started his professional career in his hometown with Birmingham City, will join Dele Alli, Cenk Tosun, Gedson Fernandes, and Wout Weghorst at the Istanbul club.

One-time England international had entered the final year of his deal, having made 232 appearances and scored 30 goals for the south coast club. He had fallen out of favour this season, playing just one minute - as Saints added as many as ten new signings in the summer window. That appearance came as a late substitute on the opening day of the campaign, during the 4-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

He was subject of a deadline day bid from Premier League new boys Bournemouth, but a move never materialised. He has, however, been deemed surplus to requirements by Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and the club has granted him a transfer away from the club with less than a year remaining on his contract. The Austrian coach saluted Redmond on his departure and backed him to shine in the Super Lig.

"It is a good change for him. After six years, it was maybe time to get something new for him. We had a fantastic time here together, with many good moments, some also not-so-good ones. But I had a good relationship with him. It's a big change for him, but I think he made a good choice."
