Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a troublesome season, but they are on course to achieve their primary target: to avoid relegation from the Premier League. In a year like that, there is the place for emotional moments - and one will likely happen at the end of the season - with the departure of captain Ruben Neves getting more likely with every passing day.

The club from central England is preparing for life after Neves' departure. The classy midfielder has been a first-team regular since he joined the then-Championship club in 2017. But, with just over 12 months left on his contract and talks of an extension put on hold, it's getting likely that the Portugal international will evaluate the options available to him - with playing in the UEFA Champions League a clear goal. Although he has tasted continental competitions with Wolves, it doesn't seem realistic that the club would qualify for the premium European tournament in the foreseeable future. As a gesture of respect for the player who defended the golden-black shirt for six years, the club directors decided they wouldn't stand in Ruben's way should he decide to leave.

Besides, the upcoming transfer window will be the last chance for Wolverhampton Wanderers to receive a considerable transfer fee for the player who cost them $20 million in July 2017. Now, they're looking to receive around $45 million for the guy who has become an established Premier League player in the meantime.

Many clubs have been mentioned as potential destinations for the 39-times Portugal international, but Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona were the most prominent. Speaking to the press last October, the Portuguese admitted that it felt good seeing his name linked with some of the biggest clubs.

"Who wouldn't want to play for Barcelona? If you ask, in general, all the players want to play for Barca, one of the best clubs in the world. It's a privilege for me to be associated with this team."

Wolves fans may be devastated to see Ruben Neves leave, but he might decide that he's waited long enough. Whatever happens, he will be considered the best player to have played for the club in this century.
