Bayer CEO wants resolution quickly

It seems that with each passing day, Xabi Alonso is getting closer to returning to Real Madrid. Speculation that he will take over from Carlo Ancelotti has resurfaced, and Bayer Leverkusen won't stand in his way should he decide to return to Spain—something confirmed by the German club's CEO, Fernando Carro. Speaking with journalists, Carro said that Alonso has a gentleman’s agreement with Bayer, meaning the club won’t stop him if he wants to move to one of the teams he used to play for.

Last June, Bayern Munich approached him, but he chose to extend his contract with the "Pharmacists" until the summer of 2026. It now seems that the Basque coach may take advantage of the privilege he holds.

“There is no release clause in his contract. We have a gentleman’s agreement with Xabi Alonso that if he gets an offer from a club he once played for, we’ll sit down and talk. We won’t stand in his way” said Carro. A similar situation arose a year ago. Bayern Munich was seriously interested in Xabi Alonso back then, but now they are doing quite well under Vincent Kompany, as is Liverpool under Arne Slot. Considering that Real Sociedad—where Alonso began his coaching career with the B team—and Eibar, where he played on loan briefly, don’t match his current coaching ambitions, Real Madrid is emerging as the clear favorite to land the promising manager.

“My gut feeling about Alonso staying says it’s 50:50. In any case, we can’t wait until the end of the season. We need to make a decision sooner to avoid negative consequences for the team. The future of Xabi Alonso will be known in the next three or four weeks,” Carro announced, also noting that Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid have an excellent relationship—only fueling expectations that the former midfielder could soon be taking a seat on the bench of the Royal Club.
