Former Red Devils' defender won't have his surname on the shirt of his new club, Racing Club de Avellaneda. The cause? Racing's archrival

Football brings different stories, with some of them being utterly unique and bizarre.

Like the latest one about former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo, who has been forced to drop his surname at the back of the shirt at his new club, Racing Club de Avellaneda. The 35-year-old centre-back has got himself a shirt number 6 which reads 'Marcos R'. The reason?

A crazy football rivalry in Argentina, because Racing's city archrival Independiente has a nickname 'Rojo' - Red. So, to avoid probable banter from Independiente's supporters, Rojo and his new side decided to ignore his surname.

Rojo joined Manchester United in 2014 from Sporting Lisbon for £16 million and made 76 appearances for the Red Devils during his stay at Old Trafford, which lasted until early 2021, with one short loan to Estudiantes.

He has recently signed for Racing Club, who are based in Avellaneda, and he has put pen to paper on a one-year deal.

Announcing the signing on social media platform X, Racing Club posted: "Marcos is now a player for the First Grande. The defender signed a one-year contract and is already available for the next Copa Libertadores match."
