Fast-rising Tusker winger Eric Zakayo is working hard to make the final Harambee Stars squad that will tackle Mali in 2022 World Cup back to back qualifier matches.

Zakayo was handed his maiden call to the team when coach Engin Firat named a 34-man provisional squad for the two crucial matches slated for early next month.

The winger, who was instrumental in Tusker’s march to their 12th title courtesy of his heroics especially when coming off the bench, termed the call up as a reward for his hard work and promised to carry the form displayed at club level to the national team.

It is the dream of every player to put on the national team shirt and represent the country. I had been praying for the opportunity and I will give my best in the camp so as to be included in the final team and even play,” he said.

Having failed in his quest to be in the Emerging Stars final team that took part in the CECAFA tournament held in Ethiopia in July, the former Tusker Youth player said he drew motivation from the disappointment and resolved to work harder with his eyes fixed on the senior team. He had been named in the Emerging Stars provisional team but was axed from the final team.

When I wasn't included in U23 final team to Ethiopia I didn’t give up even though it was disappointing not to get out there and represent the country. I doubled my efforts and I am happy that I made it to the senior team,” he noted.

With the call up expected to tag along with excitement, Zakayo said the advice from senior players at Tusker who have previously played for the national team helped him remain focused.

The big boys always counsel me on how to handle different situations and most importantly to remain disciplined. They have been motivating and encouraging me to work hard and I am glad to join them in the camp,” he added.
