Zech obiero gasping for more after making England League Two debut aged 17

Zech Obiero, son of former Gor Mahia player Aggrey Obonyo, is chuffed up after making his professional debut for English fourth-tier side Leyton Orient as the club edged Crawley Town 2-0 on Saturday evening.

Obiero featured for just over an hour, starting the match but came off for Ethan Coleman after 61 minutes.

The midfielder signed his first professional contract with the club in February this year, inking a two and a half years long deal that could see him stay at Leyton until 2024.

Speaking after his senior team debut, the 17-year-old noted that it came as a surprise to him, acknowledging it was also a nervy experience initially but his teammates helped him settle in well.

"I am thankful to the gaffer for giving me the opportunity. I did not even know I would start, it just happened so fast. I was a bit nervous in the first few touches but the boys helped me a lot and made it easy for me," Obiero said after the match

After his maiden appearance, the midfielder is looking forward to pre-season training which he believes will be a platform to showcase more of what he has to offer at the club.

"It was good. Getting around the pitch is different from youth football and I think I'm just gonna have to adapt to that. I have a lot of hunger and faith. I'm looking forward to pre-season to show them what I can do on the pitch," he added.

Obiero has been with the club's academy side since joining them at 16, and his progress earned plaudits from the academy coach Brian Saah when he was signing his first professional contract.

His brother, Micah Obiero, is in the books of Huddersfield Town Academy.

Leyton orient are 13th on League Two standings with 58 points and play Tranmere Rovers on Saturday for their final match of the season which could see them finish 12th.
