Lakers Hockey Club have appealed to well-wishers and potential partners to come to their aid financially to enable them to compete properly in the 2022 Kenya Hockey Union Women's Premier League
Kisumu-based Lakers Hockey Club lost their second league match by narrowly going down 1-0 to visiting Strathmore University University at Simba Club on Sunday.
Strathmore, who are parched at the top of the table, have now won five straight games.
Lakers, who are the only women's hockey team from the entire Western region, have endured lean financial times, hampering their performance, as they cannot train consistently.
"We were rusty and lacked cohesion in the first half. This is because we can only afford to train once a week due to lack of finances," Lakers coach Austin Tuju told Mozzart Sport.
Tuju hinted that they are currently engaging four well-wishers with the aim of bringing them on board.
On his part, Lakers team manager John Otieno thanked those who have so far ensured that they honour matches, saying that without them they would have dished out several walkovers by now.
"It has not been easy for us as a club financially, at times we are forced to dig deep into our own pockets to cater for the team's expenses. I want to appeal to potential partners and well-wishers to come forward and work with us in reviving Hockey in Kisumu and the entire region. Hockey standards in this region, which has produced a lot of talent, have dwindled over the years due to lack of financial support."
Lakers, who are sixth in the seven-team league standings, will next play Blazers and multiple Kenyan champions Blazers formerly Telkom, all away fixtures.
