Kenya’s boxing team - Hit Squad - have had a mixed bag of results in the Africa Boxing Championships, even as the competition entered Day Two in Yaounde, Cameroon on Monday.

Coming into the competition with seven quarter- finalists and two semifinalists, the load of work had to be done on the first two days of the event and one that has attracted a record 33 plus countries across the continent.

On Sunday, two of Kenya’s boxers in the pre-quarters - preliminary elimination rounds - recorded victories, with team skipper Bonface Mugunde securing a 4-1 judges’ decision victory over Burundi’s Nestor Nduwarugira in Bout Number 12 of Session 1.

In the second fight, Light heavyweight boxer Robert Okaka produced a stunning performance as he rained a couple of shots on his opponent - Idrissa Mukiibi of Uganda - before landing a strong left hook with just a minute gone in the fight, to force the referee to stop the contest, awarding Okaka a win via TKO.

Session Two of the games - which should have seen the trio of Amina Martha, Samuel Njau and Shaffi Bakari - step onto the ring, was however pushed to Monday, with Sunday’s events going through the night.

A chunk of disappointments was however the case on Monday, as three Kenyan boxers were eliminated from the championships including.

The first casualty was light welterweight Teresiah Wanjiru falling via a RSC decision inside the third round to Jeanine Mbala of Cameroon in a quarter finals matchup, with Abednego Kyalo, a minimum weight boxer, losing to Zola Livens Tulembekwa of DRC on a split judges decision.

The last fight involving Kenyans in Session One was light welterweight Ethan Maina losing to Amiri Ssali of Uganda, also on split decision.

With Monday’s sessions completed early, the three Kenyan boxers who were in Session Two of Sunday’s fights will fight in the night session at the same venue.

From the initial draw conducted on Friday, only two Kenyans - Christine Ongare (minimum weight) and Elizabeth Andiego (light heavyweight) have secured a place in the semifinals.
