The inaugural National Beach Games will be held over the weekend in Malindi
This weekend, from March 17-19, athletes from all over Kenya will gather in Malindi for the Inaugural National Beach Games hosted by the National Olympics Council of Kenya (NOC-K).
NOC-K aims to promote a sustainable sporting culture and Olympism in the country. Furthermore, this event presents an opportunity for NOC-K to bid for the 2025 Africa Beach Games.
Known for its beaches and vibrant sporting culture, Malindi will be the stage for over 15 beach games including aquathlon, judo, boxing, wrestling, kite-boarding, and open-water swimming. Additional sports like Ajua, Kerum, fishing, and dhow racing will also be featured.
Since the Inaugural World Beach Games in 2019 held in Qatar and organized by the Association of National Olympic Committee (ANOC), the popularity of the Beach Games has been growing. The first beach games in Africa were held in 2019 at the Island of Sai, Cape Verde, which attracted 44 nations, including Kenya.
Through the Beach Games, NOC-K aims to develop beach sports in Kenya and inspire more people to participate in these sports. Additionally, the Committee will use these games to promote environmental awareness and sustainability by utilizing existing beach-friendly infrastructure or developing low-impact temporary infrastructure. This approach will minimize environmental impact and promote sustainability.
