The tennis poster girl has now won the award three times.
Kenyan tennis prodigy Angella Okutoyi bagged the July Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) award, becoming the only athlete to win the award on three separate occasions.
The 18-year-old first won the award back in January 2021 before repeating the feat in January the following year and made it a three in July.
Okutoyi fended off strong opposition from 100m Commonwealth Games gold medalist Ferdinand Omanyala, double Olympic Games champion Faith Kipyegon and recently crowned 800m world champion Emmanuel Korir.
Other athletes to earn a nomination to the July gong included Dennis Abukuse who was a vital cog in Menengai Oilers claiming their maiden National Sevens Circuit title, Helen Wawira who bagged gold at the 2022 World Para Powerlifting American Open Championship and Winnie Kaburo Muthoni who won the Africa Youth Chess Championship under-8 title in Lusaka, Zambia.
History was written back in July when Okutoyi lifted the Wimbledon Girls' Doubles title to become the first ever Kenyan player to win in any Grand Slam Tournament.
Despite winning the gong for the third time, Okutoyi was elated as ever to have bagged the award which etched her name into the record books.
“I feel very happy and proud to have won this award three times. It is not something easy and I want to thank everyone for their recognition. I am really pleased and despite having been here before, it is a new feeling every time.
I want to dedicate this to Tennis Kenya, my coaches, my family and more so my grandmother who has been there through thick and thin,” said Okutoyi.
Okutoyi received a trophy engraved to her name and an LG Nanocell TV worth Sh120,000.
