African Games champion Angella Okutoyi suffered fresh disappointment in her race to make the cut for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after being knocked out of the W35 Boca Raton tournament in Florida on Friday.
The 20-year-old, bidding to make a deep run in the tournament, fell to American Allie Kiick in the quarter finals in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
The defeat brought an end to Okutoyi’s impressive run in the competition that had seen her secure two opening round wins on Wednesday and Thursday.
The 2023 Kenya Open champion first dismissed 17-year-old American An Claire 6-4, 6-3 in the Round of 32 match-up before beating Lilian Poling with an identical score-line in the last 16.
Another exit in the ITF World Tennis Tour rankings jeopardizes her chances of making this year’s Olympic Games, as she needs to make up places and be within the top 400 players on the WTA standings by 10 June.
Going by the latest WTA rankings on 22 April 2024, Okutoyi is ranked 549th in the world.
She is expected to keep up the chase at the W75 Zephyrhills Women's singles tournament in Florida next week.
The tournament runs from 6-12 May 2024.
