Bradley Wathimba stages upset at African Junior Chess Championship

Bradley Wathimba picked up his first point at the ongoing Africa Junior Chess Championship in Egypt.

Wathimba rated 1700 upset Algeria’s Kweiri Tawfik who has a 1916 rating.

Elsewhere locally, Knight Chess Academy upset league champions Equity Bank 3-2 in a Kenya National Chess Premier League match at the Co-operative University of Kenya over the weekend.

Mavens Tacticians, also unbeaten, were stunned 4-1 by a resurgent Lighthouse Alpha, which climbed to joint third with KCB Chess Club at 30 points.

Despite going down Equity remains at the top with 36 points, closely followed by Mavens Tacticians (34) and KCB Chess Club (30).

At the other end, Victoria Warriors (9), Strathmore University (8), and Nakuru Chess Club (4) are in danger of relegation.

In the Super League, Tricky Anchors seized the top spot with 53 points after rivals Mavens Chess Club and the University of Nairobi faltered against Westlands Chess Club and Mavens Warriors, respectively.

With just three matches left, the race remains incredibly tight, with Mavens and the University of Nairobi tied at 52 points.

Fidel Kingsley and Kelly Sosi drew in an all-Kenyan under-12 match at the ongoing World Cadets Chess Championships in Italy.

It was an incredible performance for Sosi who arrived in Italy on Sunday afternoon hours before the match.

Jadon Simiyu lost his second match to Armenia’s Birmenko Nikolay. The African under-12 champion now has just one point out of three matches.

It was a losing streak for other Kenyans as well in this category as Liam Valambhia went down to Georgia’s Berishvili Daviti.

Jibril Gichugu, Harold Kagwe and Luke Nganga also lost their matches.

It was the same in the girls under-12 category where Kenyan players find the tough going. Olive Wanjiru, Jasmine Malaika and Joyce Kanyi lost their matches.
