Rwanda will host the World Cycling Championship in 2025.
The City of Champions, Eldoret, is gearing up to host the continent for the African Road Cycling Championship from Wednesday, October 9, to Sunday, October 13, 2024.
This marks the first time the cycling extravaganza will be held in Kenya. Last year's edition took place in Ghana.
It will also offer an opportunity for the newly-crowned city to prove to the world that it is indeed Kenya's sporting nerve center.
Eldoret is located on a plateau with a cool temperate climate, considered one of the best in the world, offering cyclists a golden chance to compete under ideal weather conditions.
With a well-developed road network, the city holds tremendous potential to unlock a cycling culture in the region.
Confirming the news, Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Sports, Lucy Ng'endo, expressed her excitement, noting that the event would elevate Eldoret's status as a sports hub.
"I hosted a delegation from Golazo and the Kenya Cycling Federation team. We have all it takes as the City of Champions, and this event will also inspire our youth to take up cycling as a sport. The County is ready to dive into planning," Ng'endo said.
Cyclists representing African countries will compete for the men's and women's titles, with each country fielding six athletes per category.
Last year, Golazo Sports, in partnership with the Confederation of African Cycling (CAC), organized a cycling championship in Ghana, where at least 22 countries participated. Team Algeria won the event, taking home eight medals across all categories. Mauritius finished second, securing four gold medals.
These African Continental Championships are important as they set the stage for countries to watch in the lead-up to the 2025 UCI World Championships, to be held on African soil.
