Reigning Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men’s league Most Valuable Player (MVP) Elphas Makuto is set to make his debut for Rwanda National Police volleyball side this weekend, having penned a year-long deal.
Makuto, not new to Rwandese volleyball as he has played in several tournaments in the country, is clear on personal and club targets as his professional career serves off.
“This has been a long time coming,” Makuto admits in an interview with Mozzart Sport from Rwanda. “The talks began earlier and I was to be with the team last season but the move fell through.
Now that I have succeeded in joining the team I am out to be the best for my new team while improving my game as well.”
Having established himself as one of the best opposite hitters in the Kenyan league, a mainstay for the national beach team, and an integral part of Prisons Kenya’s march back to winning ways where they have clinched back-to-back titles, Makuto says Rwanda is a stepping stone to greater things.
“I love playing for this side and settling down will not be difficult. It is a new challenge for me to make a name for myself not just in Kenya but in Africa.
In addition to winning the league with Police, getting the top scorer and best opposite are also targets I have set for myself. Such accolades will open more doors for me to advance my career,” he continued.
Hailing from a volleyball family, his siblings played a pivotal role in helping him settle for his new employer.
“This has been a path to success for many of our professional volleyballers and my siblings made sure to remind me of the same when the opportunity knocked.
They offered support as I waited my turn with sound advice on how to get better,” Makuto explained.
