Every sport's pools at National School Games set to commence in Kisii

The stage is set for an exhilarating display of sporting prowess as the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national games gets underway in Kisii County.

Schools from across the country have converged in the region, eager to compete for top honours in various disciplines. The games will run until Friday, 9 August.

Kisii County was granted the hosting rights after an inspection of the county's facilities, which impressed organizers.

Initially, Kisii had been stripped of its hosting rights due to concerns about Gusii Stadium's condition and fan violence during the Nyanza Region Games. However, subsequent renovations and assurances from local authorities have led to a change of heart.

KSSSA chairman Kipchumba Maiyo expressed satisfaction with the county's progress, stating that facilities were 90% complete. The decision to return the games to Kisii was also influenced by the fact that former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu had initially chosen the county as the host.

Football matches will be held at Gusii Stadium, Kisii High School, and Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho. Basketball, netball, rugby sevens, and racquet sports will take place at Kisii School, while Cardinal Otunga will also host volleyball.

Students will be accommodated at Nyabururu Girls High School (girls) and Kisii School (boys) for the duration of the games.

Match officials underwent training from Monday 29 to Wednesday 31 July, with teams arriving on July 30. A tree-planting initiative involving all participants preceded the opening ceremony on Thursday 1 August.
