FIBA Africa has been forced to postpone the FIBA Africa U23 3x3 Nations League due to ongoing protests.
The continental competition, dubbed Africa-1 conference, was scheduled for Mombasa from 2 to 8 July 2-8.
In a letter dated 28 June, addressed to all Federations that has expressed interest in the competition, FIBA announced;
"FIBA has closely monitored the current political situation in Kenya and the ongoing protests in the country. Safety of players, officials and all involved parties has absolute priority for FIBA.
While the host in Kenya has done everything in their power to provide a safe and secure environment, the current, unpredictable situation unfortunately forces FIBA to cancel the FIBA 3x3 Youth Nations League 2024-Africa-1 Sextuple planned for 2-8 July 2024 in Mombasa, Kenya.
FIBA will try to the best of our abilities to swiftly find alternatives for playing the competition within the FIBA 3x3 Youth Nations League 2024 competition period and will keep you posted on any developments in that regard," an email to all federations from Robert Rieblinger, FIBA 3x3 Sport & Development Senior Manager, reads.
The Nations League was launched in 2017 as a development program for men and women under the age of 23 to develop their skills in preparation for the open category.
This year's seventh edition got underway in June featuring 13 different conferences comprising players under the age of 23 (including U21 teams). Qualifiers end in August.
To spice things up, this edition also serves as a new qualification route to the FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup 2024.
Conference winners will qualify for the showpiece youth event, which will be played in 3x3 crazy Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on September 11-15.
