Four titles in the Kenyan bag as ITF/CAT Junior Championships conclude

Burundi finished in second place in girls' under-16 category, with Uganda managing third place

Kenya swept four titles as the International Tennis Federation (ITF) /Confederation of African Tennis (CAT)East Africa Junior Individual Championships came to an end at Nairobi Club on Saturday.

This helped the country to clinch the overall championships in a tournament that attracted nine countries.

Kenya first clinched the girls under-14 title where Bathsheba Ogamba beat Paula Ouko 6-2,6-4.

It was Ogamba’s first ever zonal title.

The home team also clinched the boys under-14 title with Indiatsi Olembo dismissing Burundian Abdoul Nduwimana 6-0, 6-2.

An all-Kenyan final was witnessed in the girls' under 16 category.

Nancy Kawira beat Selina Ahoya 6-2, 6-3 to secure her second zonal title, achieving the rare feat of back-to-back titles over consecutive days.

Then Jeff Okuku capped of a successful week, beating another Burundian Dan Muterampuhwe 7-6(4) 7-5 to win the boys under-16 title.

Burundi finished in second place in girls' under-16 category, with Uganda managing third place.

They were followed by Tanzania, with Rwanda finishing last.

Tanzania managed second position in the boys under-14 category, with Uganda finishing third.

In the boys under-16, Rwanda finished runners-up and Somalia finished third.

Kenya Lawn Tennis Association (KLTA) said, in a statement, that the performance is a testament to the strength and depth of its junior development pathway.

“Tennis Kenya is very proud of our junior players for their commitment, resilience, and sportsmanship, these results reflect sustained investment in junior development and competitive opportunities,” read the statement.

The statement further added that the country will carry the momentum forward with confidence, looking ahead not only to regional success, but also to making a strong impact at the continental African championships.

After the East Africa Junior Championships, attention now turns to the Team competition, where Kenya will aim to defend its titles across all four categories as the championships continue from Monday.
