Gold Cup: Police register first win in Gold Cup after shooting down Mashujaa

The Kenya Police men's hockey team can finally afford a smile after bagging the maiden win in the ongoing Gold Cup Invitational Tournament following their 4-1 win over USIU-A Mashujaa at the Sikh Union Stadium on Monday.

Police began their bid to claim the title on the wrong footing as they bowed 4-1 to the visiting Ghanaian side Exchequers on Saturday before losing 1-0 to the 2016 Kenyan champions Strathmore University Gladiators on Sunday.

However Patrick Mugambi's charges can now rest easy after shooting down the students to end the wait for the first win in the tournament that is set to roll throughout the week.

The law enforcers took the lead in the 22nd minute through Calvins Oriema and would double their advantage in the 34th minute through Kennedy Sibweche who also slotted home from a well worked move.

Brian Saina stretched the lead to three goals after scoring from a penalty corner in the 36th minute before the evergreen Oliver Echenje netting the fourth in the 58th minute from another short corner.

Mashujaa grabbed the consolation goal in the 43rd minute through Jose Baraka but his goal was not enough to stop them from recording their second loss in the tournament as they had fallen 2-0 to Exchequers on Sunday.

Exchequers who are yet to find their match since jetting in continued with the fine run on Kenyan soil after humbling Gladiators 4-2 at the same venue.

Skipper Akaba Elikem who tops the scores chart with six goals was a thorn in the flesh of Meshack Senge's charges as he helped himself to an hat-trick.

Ghanaian hockey outfit Exchequers continue with good run in Kenya

Gladiators broke the deadlock in the fifth minute through Brian Nyabuto but the visitors leveled matters two minutes later through Akaba.

The forward added a brace in the 24th and 51st minutes of the game with Nortey Ebenezer adding the extra in the 56th minute. Gladiators scored their second goal in the 54th minute through Noel Lormotum.
